The Vale dos Vinhedos, 90 minutes south of Porto Alegre in the Serra Gaúcha mountains, is the spiritual home of Brazilian wine. Italian immigrant families arrived here in the 1870s with vine cuttings and determination; their descendants now produce Brazil's finest Merlot, Cabernet Franc and the extraordinary spumante brut that has placed this valley on the global wine map.
